Reviews for Andy and Sam Hide-and-Seek

Horn Book Guide Reviews 2010 Fall
In this bright and colorful Dutch import, young Andy appears on double-page spreads along with questions about each picture ("Find the ants. What are they doing?"). His striped cat, Sam, is in every illustration, giving preschoolers a familiar character to look for. The questions vary nicely, and kids will enjoy searching for the items. A final spread supplies answers. Copyright 2010 Horn Book Guide Reviews.

Publishers Weekly Reviews 2010 March #3

In this Dutch import, a boy named Andy invites readers to help him find his cat, Sam, who is sometimes "a bit naughty" and likes to hide. The search starts in the house and backyard, before moving to locales like the beach, zoo, and even the sky. Andy describes each scene ("The farm is a very busy place. Chicken, cows, horses, sheep.... They're all my friends!") while prompts at the bottom of each spread ask readers to find various objects and animals. The sunny cartoons and enthusiastic child narrator make this an especially inviting diversion. Ages 2-5. (Mar.)

School Library Journal Reviews 2010 June

PreS-Gr 1--First published in the Netherlands in 2009, this colorful depiction of a young boy's busy day contains 11 double-page scenes, including a visit to the beach, lunchtime at the zoo, and bedtime back home. After a brief introduction to each new setting, readers are challenged to find Andy's cat, Sam. Five additional questions follow, designed to reinforce counting, color, and animal identification, e.g., "Can you find the white chicken?" "How many rabbits are there?" as well as foster more deductive skills ("The bird has a worm. Who do you think it's for?") There's plenty to pore over on every spread, but the sunny and simple cartoon illustrations never seem cluttered, and a clever visual answer key enhances the experience. Though too detailed for read-alouds, this "I Spy" for the preschool set might also be enjoyed in elementary ESL classrooms.--Amy Rowland, Shelter Rock Elementary School, Manhasset, NY
