Reviews for My Food Pyramid

School Library Journal Reviews 2010 November

PreS-Gr 1--Reducing nutrition to the most basic of elements, each volume presents a food group in no more than two sentences per page, printed on white space below color photographs and illustrating healthy foods being enjoyed by a multicultural array of people. The vocabulary and sentence structure are ideal for beginning readers but the frequent oversimplification of concepts (e.g., "Milk is a drink that is made by some animals") pushes these books from being scientifically informative to an experience resembling a phonics lesson. The publishers acknowledge that the books' best use is as part of a more extensive nutrition curriculum: tips to parents and teachers are included in each title, as well as a picture glossary (again, very simple) and a quiz based on the text.
