Booklist Reviews 2012 June #1
Baseball aficionado and elementary student Chad Snyder snags a plum summer job as bat boy for the Pine City Porcupines, a hapless farm team. Sharing duties with him is classmate Dylan, who surprisingly has no interest in the sport. Together the boys share hard work, make some mistakes, and begin to forge a friendship based on their shared experiences. In this title, Chad helps struggling shortstop Mike Stammer realize that he is not jinxed. The author of Mudville (2009) here begins the Topps League Story series, aimed at those transitioning from easy readers. Using short chapters (most illustrated with black line drawings), Scaletta offers much play-by-play commentary, a revealing behind-the-scenes view of the players, and plenty of opportunities for Chad to save the day using information found in his large baseball card collection. Similar to the many titles by the late Matt Christopher, this makes a good choice for those not quite ready for Dan Gutman's Baseball Card Adventures. To be appended with stats, a glossary, and trading cards. Copyright 2012 Booklist Reviews.
