Reviews for Molly's Pilgrim

Booklist Monthly Selections - #2 November 1998
Ages 6^-9. First published in 1983, this affecting story tells of a Russian immigrant girl whose mother makes a contemporary Pilgrim doll (modeled on herself, a modern pilgrim who came to America seeking religious freedom) for the class model of the first Plymouth Thanksgiving. The new illustrations, shaded pencil drawings, are often sensitively drawn, though the characters' expressions sometimes seem exaggerated. Apparently set in the 1940s, the story still has relevance today. ((Reviewed November 15, 1998)) Copyright 2000 Booklist Reviews

Horn Book Guide Reviews 1999
Cohen's story of a young Jewish Russian immigrant girl who learns about the first Thanksgiving and teaches her classmates a lesson about pilgrims has been re-illustrated and given a new, full-color cover. The pencil illustrations, now on white paper instead of cream colored, are uneven--the characters do not always show the feelings expressed in the text--and lack the understatement of the original artwork.
